Ns News Online Desk: Ukrainian officials said Sunday that power has been restored to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko said “heroes” from the national power-grid company were able to repair the plant’s connection to a high-powered line, which had been damaged in fighting with Russian forces.

Ukraine had previously warned that the power was essential to run pumps that keep the offline reactor’s spent nuclear fuel cool, preventing radiation leaks.

Chernobyl was the site of the world’s worst nuclear meltdown in 1986 and is not currently in use. But it still requires more than 2,000 workers to constantly manage it to prevent another catastrophic radioactive leak. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelesnky visited injured soldiers in a Kyiv hospital Sunday, presenting medals to the wounded servicemen in their hospital beds. Photos from the scene showed the president talking to members of his troops, who were in various conditions.

One snap captured him appearing to take a selfie with a bedridden soldier, who he later awarded a medal.
