Ns News Online Desk: In possible moves that, if true, could quell days of growing rage over the separation of migrant children from their parents, President Trump will either support a bill that would reverse his hard line “zero tolerance” immigration policy or take executive action to change it, new reports said Wednesday. NBC News, citing unnamed White House officials, first reported the commander-in-chief’s supposed change of heart about supporting a bill.
But the network later reported that Trump could also take executive action. “President Trump on immigration: ‘I’ll be signing something in a little while … something that’s somewhat preemptive and ultimately will be matched by legislation, I’m sure,’” the network reported on Twitter.
Trump has said in the past that he would back either of two House bills that would extend the time that immigrant children can be held after they cross the border illegally with their parents. That would allow families to remain together, but could also mean that the kids would be kept in custody far longer than they can be held now.
The president took to Twitter on Wednesday morning to again falsely blame Democrats for his policy — but also hinted at a possible compromise. “It’s the Democrats fault, they won’t give us the votes needed to pass good immigration legislation. They want open borders, which breeds horrible crime. Republicans want security. But I am working on something – it never ends!” he wrote.
Trump has been under steadily mounting bipartisan pressure to reverse course on his policy, which has resulted in more than 2,000 children being taken from their parents and housed in makeshift cages in an empty big-box store in Texas and other shelters, including a number in New York. Pope Francis and other religious leaders — even some staunch Trump-loving evangelicals — have also slammed the policy as cruel and inhumane.
