US-Record-high 5,674 guns seized at TSA checkpoints in 2021
Ns News Online Desk: Eighty-five percent of the firearms that were confiscated were loaded with ammunition – and the airports with the most seizures were Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston, CBS News reported .
“It’s an all-time high,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said Monday. “The reason? I think there’s just more firearm carriage in the country. That’s the best answer I can give you.” The previous record high was in 2019 when 4,400 firearms were confiscated at airport security checkpoints. People caught carrying loaded or unloaded firearms with accessible ammunition face fines between $3,000 and $10,000.
“It’s a pretty costly mistake to make,” the TSA administrator said. The most gun seizures this year have taken place in Atlanta, Georgia.Last month, a man fired his gun at Atlanta’s Hartfield-Jackson International Airport after he was told not to touch his bag during a TSA screening. The passenger — identified as 42-year-old Kenny Wells — “lunged” for his gun, setting off a blast that sparked chaos and false reports of an active shooter.
A 48-year-old man faced New Jersey federal court last week for allegedly carrying a gun through security at Newark Liberty International Airport as he tried to board a flight to Atlanta. Desmond Herring, 48, was allegedly caught carrying a 9 millimeter pistol, 10 rounds of 9 millimeter ammunition loaded into a magazine, and three boxes of ammunition that each contained 50 rounds of 9 millimeter ammunition.
