‘Violent’ tornado rips through Missouri, fatalities feared

Ns News Online DeskNs News Online Desk: A powerful tornado ripped through the state capital of Missouri on Wednesday evening, downing power lines and doing damage that could include fatalities, according to local authorities and reports.

The twister — which was described as a “violent tornado” by the National Weather Service — stormed through the center of Jefferson City soon before midnight, knocking out power to swaths of the city, the city’s newspaper, the News Tribune, reported.

Emergency crews were working to locate trapped people in buildings that may have collapsed, according to the report. The city’s mayor issued a mandatory evacuation order for one of the town’s residential areas and the airport was also evacuated. They added all power lines should be considered live. Gov. Mike Parson wrote on Twitter that he was praying for those caught in the twister’s path.

“Major tornado s across state tonight, including Jeff City,” Parson wrote. “We’re doing okay but praying for those that were caught in damage, some are still trapped – local emergency crews are on site and assisting.” The Jefferson City tornado was part of a series of violent twisters that ravaged the Midwest Wednesday night.
