Zia Orphanage Trust graft case Khaleda jailed for 5yrs, Tarique 5 others for 10yrs

 Ns News Online DeskNs News Online Desk: A makeshift court on Thursday sentenced BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to five years of imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. The court also awarded Tarique Rahman, BNP’s senior vice president and party chief’s eldest son, and four others 10 years in jail. Md Akhtaruzzaman, Judge of the Special Judge’s Court-5, pronounced the judgment after reading the 623-page verdict for 18 minutes. The court also fined Tk 2.10 crore each. Earlier around 1:40pm, the BNP chief’s motorcade reached the court.

The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on July 3, 2008, with Ramna Police Station accusing Khaleda, Tarique Rahman, and four others for misappropriating money. The other accused are former lawmaker Salimul Haque, businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed, Khaleda’s former principal secretary Kamal Uddin Siddiqui and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s nephew Mominur Rahman. Kamal Uddin and Mominur have long been absconding.
